Nick Eubanks had posed a few questions in the comments section of my Prepping for 2012 post, and I thought the answers really warranted a full write up.
What’s your take on guest blogging?
Well, that depends. For sites that I actually care about (client sites, larger/authority sites) I think it’s great. Guest blogging is fantastic for:
- Brand building
- Tapping into an existing, related audience
- Spreading and building your name
- Future networking (through other webmasters seeing your guest post)
- Credibility building / Reputation management
- Links
So – there’s tons of benefits and the only real cost is time. However – this shouldn’t be a net new cost. Much of the time is going to be spent networking your way into a guest blogging situation, and you should be doing this networking anyway.
That said, for throw-away MFA sites that target one keyword – it’s too much work.
Do you do it? How often?
As myself? No – not yet. I plan on doing some for 2012, though. Not too often… maybe twice a quarter. First one will be for Mike King. Maybe some YouMoz posts. We’ll see.
For important sites/clients – it’s really as often as you have time for given the client budget or website potential. Those links and the exposure that comes with are both damn good.
Do you try to get other people in the space to contribute on here?
Honestly – that’s the first time the thought crossed my mind. I blog here pretty infrequently because I try and stay away from just echo-chambering (it’s a word – look it up) whatever hot thing is going on this week that everyone else already covered (likely better than I would have, anyway) but I’m hoping to get more consistent with publishing in the new year. Also, that big ass run-on sentence is a good example of why I don’t post often.
If anyone wants to pitch a topic for a guest post, just hit me up on the twitter machine.
